Building Careers

Starting 2018 with Gratitude

It’s the people we share the important moments with that truly impact our lives. They challenge us to be the best we can be and to get better at what we do and how we do it. As I wrap up the year and reflect on what I have experienced and learned over the past twelve months (now an annual tradition), this is what I take with me into 2018…

Gratitude for the exceptional job candidates and companies that put your trust in us and gave Building Careers your business. The relationship between a recruiter and a client isn’t always a slam dunk. But what I can tell you is when the partnership is collaborative and transparent, the investment is well worth it.

This past year, the Building Careers team has enjoyed working with your organizations in positions ranging from real estate asset management executives to vice president-level construction and development managers and everything in between. Many of you challenged us to look at your professional and business needs in new and different ways and to put any assumptions aside. When we did, the recruitment process was more efficient and the end result was more successful.

Family comes first and my daughter, born in April, reminds me of that every day. It has been a whirlwind ever since she came into our world and balancing a family, a business and running a household has taught me a whole new level of patience and gratitude. Ultimately, every night, before my head hits the pillow, my husband and I tuck our beautiful little girl into bed (hopefully in one go!) and I reset my worries and priorities and I smile. I am now a mom thanks to her and she deserves everything I’ve got!

This past year you saw a lot more of the Building Careers team – Julia Turpit and Regan Shouldis – so you know just what they’re made of. Delegation doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Me included! However, this was my year to ‘manage by letting go,’ and I had to step outside of my comfort zone to do it. Julia and Regan pretty much ran the show from April to July and did an outstanding job. The bar has been raised and we are well positioned for a productive and exciting 2018.

The real estate industry will continue to evolve in 2018 with a sharper focus on emerging technologies, the need for faster and more accurate data access to allow for improved tenant service, rapidly changing tenant dynamics, customer demographic shifts, talent nurturing and company culture. We are ready and continue to develop expert solutions by working from the viewpoint of the client community we are so fortunate to represent.

Thank you. Happy holidays to you and your loved ones. See you next year!

You Have to Kiss a lot of Frogs

How Interviewing for Jobs is Like Playing The Dating Game

Searching for a new job, whether currently employed or not, can be a frustrating and tedious process. I often work with candidates who are struggling to find “the right” position and company. Some are exasperated because it’s taking too long and others are discouraged because they are seeing a lot of opportunities in the market but none quite right for them.

In order to help candidates have more patience and understand the process, here’s what I tell them: Job hunting is a whole lot like dating. Finding the right partner doesn’t happen overnight and in the meantime there’s a lot of trial and error that must take place.

The same is true with job hunting. The saying, “you have to kiss a lot of frogs,” is similar to my sentiments when it comes to interviews. While interviews can be hard to get, nerve-wracking once they’re scheduled, and sometimes not lead to a match, they are a crucial part of finding the right fit. Going on interviews, like going on dates, is how you determine your likes and dislikes and your must-haves and can-live-withouts. Interviewing is how you get an overall sense of a company and the open position and whether or not you will be fulfilled – professionally and personally – and where your contributions will be needed and recognized.

What I also share with candidates is: When in doubt, submit your resume and go on the interview. Submitting a resume through a recruiter who has a close partnership with the company you’re interested in gives you a much stronger chance of making sure your resume is seen by the hiring managers. It’s an initial stamp of approval similar to being introduced by mutual friends in the dating world. If the company is interested in meeting with you but you’re hesitant that it’s not the right fit, go anyway. You may be pleasantly surprised and realize it’s your dream job (trust me, it happens all the time) and if it falls short, then you walk away with added industry knowledge and a solid hour of interview practice.

I personally have faced the frustration and ups and downs of the job search process. Having jumped in headfirst to a few positions then realizing they weren’t right for me, I had to start again. I took this time to really do my industry research, connect with my network and go on plenty of interviews. It took me three wrong positions to figure out what the right one was, but I had faith in the process and now couldn’t have asked for a better professional match.

When all else fails, keep trying. Eventually most people realize it’s better to keep “dating,” seeing what positions and companies are out there, and making sure there’s a mutual fit before jumping to the next job. Remember, it’s just a process and in the end, it works out as it should.

Developing Leader Spotlight: The CRE Connector

While studying finance at Penn State, Glova became enamored of the dynamic and tangible world of commercial real estate, and wrote her honors college thesis on commercial real estate analysis and trends. After nearly 10 years in commercial real estate finance, Glova founded an executive search firm serving the CRE industry. As president and executive recruiter of Building Careers, LLC, she uses her experience in the real estate industry to help employers recruit and retain top-tier talent. Glova previously worked as an associate, real estate finance, for BioMed Realty Trust.

Glova serves on the NAIOP San Diego Developing Leaders Council with a focus on university outreach through individual events and the NAIOP University Challenge. She also serves as the vice president of membership for the chapter’s Toastmasters Club. NAIOP set out to discover the inspiration and motivation driving this entrepreneur’s success.

Carly Glova, Commercial Real Estate Recruiter

NAIOP: What are some of the most rewarding aspects of your job?

Glova: The most rewarding aspect of my job is being able to assist employees on the path to their dream career while creating a connection with employers who are also inspired to succeed.

NAIOP: How has being a member of NAIOP helped your career?

Glova: Being a NAIOP member throughout my entire professional career has been the single most helpful element in growing my career and starting my business. When I initially hit a career crossroads, I reached out to my NAIOP network to learn more about their roles and companies. Having conversations with my peers and mentors regarding their ideal career paths led me to an interesting conclusion about my own. I discovered that understanding peoples’ motivations and providing the path and connections for them to get there is where I wanted to take my career. This NAIOP-assisted discovery was the catalyst to the founding of my recruiting firm.

NAIOP: What advice would you offer to other young professionals in commercial real estate?

Glova: My most important career lesson was realizing how essential and amazing my network is. Nurture, expand, exercise your network and resources and you will be pleasantly surprised by the results.

NAIOP: Who has been an inspiring or influential figure in your life?

Glova: My father, a fellow entrepreneur, has been an influential figure throughout my entire life. He has instilled values in me that gave me the courage to start and run a successful business.

Everyone an Entrepreneur: Taking a risk and making the climb to reach my dream career

We are all entrepreneurs. This is a core value at Building Careers and something I believe wholeheartedly. Not necessarily in the traditional sense of the word, but more so in the spirit in which we have the opportunity to approach our professional lives.

No matter what our job situation is, it often takes an entrepreneurial spirit to embrace new opportunities, accept and inspire new ways of thinking, empower others, and lead change and make things happen – aka get things done.

The same goes for job seekers and applies to my own career journey. There are times when looking for a job is not for the faint of heart. It takes courage to leave a secure job. It takes confidence to recognize the value you bring to the table and a certain amount of drive and ambition to search for that role that will ensure you’re fully utilized. It takes a willingness to step outside of your comfort zone to keep challenging yourself to try something new.

Last September, I hiked Half Dome in Yosemite National Park to face one of my biggest fears of cliffs. I am happy to say my friends and I made it to the top after the exhilarating but grueling 8 miles, 4,800 feet of elevation and… the cables! This extraordinary experience brought me outside of my comfort zone, gave me a whole lot of perspective and reminded me that we are capable of more than we think we are when we put our mind to it. It also taught me about the power of supporting friends and family. Mine always have my back.

It took me several steps and big decisions to get to where I am today working in my dream job as a recruiting consultant with Carly and Julia at Building Careers. Some of the decisions I made came naturally. Some not so much.

Over the past six years, I have had the pleasure of working in commercial real estate digging in to all aspects of the business from marketing to sales to office administration to analysis. In 2014, I packed my bags and left my hometown in Virginia (for the first time ever) and moved to San Diego. This growth and movement helped propel my professional development forward and prepare me for this exciting new role.

I’ve learned that if you aren’t willing to take a great risk, then you aren’t ready for the change you’ve been dreaming of. If you look up at the whole mountain and think about how far that cliff looks, it can be too hard to want to try to take it on. But if you just take that first step and take it one step at a time, before you know it you’re at the top and accomplishing your meaningful goals and dreams. This applies to taking that leap in your career and if you take the first step of reaching out.

Carly and Julia are a successful, inspiring team of entrepreneurs. Together, I look forward to helping you as job seekers discover your entrepreneurial spirit, help you make career choices that reflect your full potential and find you that dream job.

Join me in welcoming Regan Shouldis as a valuable addition to our consulting team! As we celebrate our company’s two year anniversary this month, it’s exciting to introduce new talent and continue to watch our network and success grow! – Carly

Tell Us About Your “Dream Job” For The Chance To Receive…

This month, we decided to try something different for a bit of fun. We invite you to tell us what your “Dream Job” is for the chance to win access to one commercial real estate industry event of the winner’s choosing every month in Q2 2017 compliments of the Building Careers Team. This can include any of the impressive local and national events and conferences put on by industry organizations such as NAIOP, CREW, ULI, Bisnow, ICSC, SIOR, BOMA, IREM, RealShare, Connect, etc. Your chosen events are amazing opportunities to network, hear from industry experts/speakers, and invest in your career.

What is your Dream Job?

There are two steps to the process.

The first step is to write one or two brief paragraphs about your dream job. It could be the job you dreamed of as a child or the job in the profession or field you studied in college that has been eluding you ever since. It could even be related to the skills you are currently applying to a hobby but you know could also be used to earn a living. How you write your description is entirely up to you. Here are some ideas for what you could include for details: Job responsibilities, title/level of position, area of real estate expertise, salary, skills, location/city, team culture and environment. Please remember to include your contact information!

The second step is to email us your “Dream Job” description by March 31, 2017. Every job description will be entered into the drawing and on March 31, 2017 we will randomly select one entry from the group of submissions. That professional will be contacted and we will arrange for them to attend their chosen events. For everyone else, we will contact you to discuss career opportunities unless you indicated you are not interested in a conversation.

We hope you’ll participate whether you’re actively searching for a new job or not. This exercise gives you the chance to think about and “put in writing” your dream job, which brings you that much closer to achieving it. It also gives us the chance to get to know you and help many of you turn your dream job into reality.

Closing the Gap: My Thoughts on Mentorship and CREW’s White Paper

A few of my experiences with mentorship:

“All of my mentors to this point have played an essential role in creating and growing my business. Through these relationships I have gained introductions to their companies’ hiring processes, which has generated business for me. This was never the result of a direct ask but rather from the relationship that was established between us. I have also become more skilled at high-level networking through these relationships.”

Five Key Takeaways from 2016…

December is the time when we tend to reflect on the past year, both personally and professionally. I celebrate achievements, refresh my mind on lessons learned and gain inspiration for the year ahead. These days, I find the lines between personal and professional are blurring, and I believe our lives are richer and more fulfilling because of it.

As I share with you my takeaways from 2016, I want to thank the extraordinary community who helped create and share these experiences with me.

Be Authentic The professionalism and integrity of our clients is an absolute inspiration. Reaching out to recruiters and asking for recruitment help takes thoughtful wisdom and the courage to be transparent. Our clients and our candidates told us what they were looking for and were honest with themselves and with us about their needs, their capabilities, and what was important to them. As a result, my team was in a better position to swiftly match candidates to open opportunities and create longstanding relationships. Authenticity is a core pillar of Building Careers’ culture and allows us to connect with everyone that we interact with on a more genuine level.

Be Proactive In April, we celebrated the one-year anniversary of Building Careers. The first year was a busy one and it felt like it flew by! Something that helped me (most of the time!) maintain the “business start-up” pace was to always stay several steps ahead in anticipating my clients’ needs. I also provided them with the type of communication and feedback that I, myself, would like to receive in their position. It ensured that I consistently came to the table with recommendations for new opportunities and had addressed any challenges before they could arise.

Empower Others Learning how to manage a team is easier said than done and an ever-evolving journey in my eyes. Recruiting Consultant, Julia Turpit, joined Building Careers this year. While she made the whole process of handing over some of my responsibilities to her rather seamless, what I did witness is this: As I put more of my trust in Julia, her performance only got better and she was (and is) more successful in her role. You will be seeing more of her in 2017!

Take a Breath Only good things can come from taking a step away from a situation before reacting. When I took a few deep breaths or went for a quick walk, I was able to approach my next moves with clear intentions and open-mindedness to the needs of my clients and candidates. Those moments gave me the time and space to refine my client solutions and remember to be present in that given moment.

Appreciate all of it Sometimes we get so caught up with the end goal that we forget to appreciate the day-to-day moments that get us there. Matching employers with job seekers is a process and it’s in that process that I get to form bonds with many amazing individuals, teams and companies. This year, my team and I helped a finance associate relocate to be closer to his family and helped another manager fulfill her dream of living in sunny San Diego. For one company, we were able to grow their team and company reach by fifty percent. When the day comes that a placement is made, I am excited for all parties involved but also don’t take for granted what it took to achieve the positive outcome and the amazing network around me and my team that played a part.
