Finding the Right Talent in CRE

Finding and identifying the right talent is becoming harder and harder for rapidly growing commercial real estate companies. As business booms, and companies compete for talent, it is more difficult and extremely time consuming to not only know where to look, but then spend countless days vetting candidates to determine if they are the perfect fit for your firm. Look to us as a hiring resource for your Southern California CRE needs to connect you with great candidates.

“Continuing to identify the right talent to take advantage of the opportunities it has remains one of the greatest challenges for HFF, West Coast leaders Kevin MacKenzie and Michael Leggett tell GlobeSt.com.”

Want to Be Happy and Successful? Read this!

“When you’re happy, then you’ll find the success you’re looking for.” – Peter Economy.

Happiness is such a nebulous idea and something that I definitely struggled to get comfortable with. Starting Building Careers didn’t happen in a night and the process of turning this life-calling into a business only happened after nearly a year of personal and professional soul searching. While I can’t say I am always 100% happy, I have first-hand experience in understanding that established personal contentment and happiness have a tremendous positive impact on your success both in life and in business.

Happiness and Success | Personal and Professional Satisfaction

I heard a saying that keeps working its way into my life through the plethora of wonderful, motivated, successful and happy people that I meet on a daily basis, including Building Careers’ wonderful consultant, Julia. The saying is “Don’t just do what you love. Do what you love that loves you back.” This is truly the secret to success and happiness because if you love something and you are meant to be doing it in that it comes naturally to you, you will exemplify that passion and skill in every aspect of your business.

Best Tips for Acing a Phone Interview

In our virtual world, more companies are moving towards phone interviews as a time effective way to get a sense for your personality and qualifications. Learn how to present your best self to potential employers in this initial step in the interview process.

Phone Interview | Research and Prepare

Treat a phone interview like any other interview you may have. Wake up early, have a substantial breakfast and your morning coffee, dress in interview attire, and review your interview notes.

Your interview notes should be created based on your review of the company, the job description, and your relevant background.

Find a quiet place to set up and have your resume available as well as the questions you have prepared for the interviewer. I recommend preparing 3-5 questions for the interviewer and have included examples below:

  1. The company
  • The company’s long-term strategy
  • How a new acquisition, project, or initiative with affect this position/the department, etc.

2. The Interviewer

  • The interviewer’s career experience
  • What has the interviewer’s experience been at the company, and what do they like about it

3. The Position

  • What is the background of the position? Are you replacing someone or is it a new role?
  • What will it take to be successful in this position?
  • Ask about things that matter to you depending on lifestyle – Travel? Culture of the group?

The number one piece of advice I have regarding interviews is JUST BE YOURSELF!

This makes for a smoother conversation and connection and increases the likelihood that the company will want to continue in the hiring process with you by setting up an in-person meeting.

Civic San Diego Approves the Navy Broadway Redevelopment

San Diego Business District I Redevleopment and Expansion of San Diego Commercial Hub

The 3M SF Navy Broadway Complex redevelopment will dramatically change San Diego’s marina landscape, with an anticipated delivery date in 2019. It is exciting to be in a city that is growing to the point where the city can absorb such a significant redevelopment.

This approval will bring a significant amount of jobs to the region, not just in the next few years while the project is underway, but in the commercial office and retail space that is produced. Keep your eye on San Diego as America’s Finest City continues to grow.

Best Places to Work 2016

Successful Teamwork I Employee Engagement and Benefits

These lists always fascinate me because they are determined by people who have voluntarily taken time out of their day to give a positive review.

So many of the reviews I see are negative rants about a rude customer service rep. Rarely do you see a sparkling review about a friendly, stellar customer service experience. Why when we have a negative experience do we want to get the word out there? Is it to look for consolation and commiseration with others in the same boat? Maybe when we have good experiences, instead of shouting that from the roof tops, we’d prefer to keep that gem to ourselves. Heck, the more people that get this great experience, the harder that person/company will have to work to keep it up.

Either way, the companies on this list are doing something right. They know how to treat their employees, who are the engine behind most of these successful machines. In creating this list, Glassdoor asked employees to rank their companies in categories including culture and values, compensation and benefits, career opportunities, and work-life balance. See who made it to the top! Is your dream employer on this list?

6 “Do-Gooder” Holiday Jobs That Pay

Want to give back while earning a couple of extra bucks this season? Have a look at these 6 “do-gooder” jobs.

Giving the Gift of Charity and Still Making Money I Holiday Season I Christmas

“This season, retailers will hire about 755,000 people from October through December — roughly equal to hiring last year, according to an analysis by outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Many of the holiday jobs will be with big-box retailers: For example, Wal-Mart is hiring 60,000 people, Macy’s 85,000 (for Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s stores), Target 70,000, Kohl’s 69,000 and Toys “R” Us 40,000.

But for many of Americans, working at a giant retailer stocking shelves or manning a register has about the same appeal as doing the dishes. For those who just need to pocket a few extra bucks, that may be fine. But some people wish to give back while earning that holiday-season cash.”
