6 Ways To Assess Whether You Should Decline A Job Offer

Receiving a job offer can feel like reaching the finish line, especially after a long or challenging search. There’s relief, validation and often genuine excitement in knowing that an organization has chosen you.

But an offer isn’t the end of the decision-making process. In many ways, it’s when the most important evaluation begins.

In my years of career and leadership coaching, and through research with thousands of professionals, I’ve seen how easy it is to become so focused on getting the job that we stop asking whether we actually want the job and can thrive and succeed in it—and whether accepting it will move us forward in the professional life we want to build.

This becomes even more challenging when we’re unhappy in our current role, have been searching for a long time, or feel financial pressure to make a move. Under those conditions, almost any viable opportunity can begin to look like the answer.

And in a difficult job market, when opportunities may be fewer and searches can stretch on much longer than hoped, turning down a solid offer can feel particularly risky—and simply may not be financially feasible.

But when you do have the ability to choose, sometimes the most career-advancing decision you can make is to say “no.”
