A real estate investment and development firm focused on acquiring, repositioning, and managing value-add retail properties across the U.S. is seeking an intelligent, resourceful, and hardworking accounting professional to join our team as the Director of Accounting and Finance. This executive will supervise a seasoned Controller and an accounting department of three individuals, recommending cost-effective efficiencies to streamline and automate operations. The position requires excellent communication skills, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work effectively in teams, adding value to our management strategy.
Responsibilities
- Supervise the accounting department, including a seasoned Controller and three accounting staff, ensuring efficient operations and high-quality financial management.
- Recommend and implement cost-effective efficiencies to streamline and automate accounting and financial operations, driving operational excellence.
- Evaluate year-end financial results and complete comprehensive capital account analyses, providing valuable insights for strategic decision-making.
- Produce detailed and accurate work products for outside CPAs preparing tax returns, facilitating smooth and efficient tax processes.
- Oversee financial reporting for all commercial properties, ensuring accuracy, and transparency.
- Actively participate in financing, acquisition, and disposition transactions, providing critical financial insights and support to the President of DPI.
- Develop and recommend procedures to enhance revenue and contain costs across the company, contributing to financial sustainability and growth.
- Become thoroughly familiar with loan agreements, ensuring compliance and effective management of loan-related financial activities.
- Coordinate with property management executives to ensure accurate and effective reporting and presentation of property revenue and operations.
- Approve and accurately record semi-monthly payroll computations managed by the HR Manager, ensuring timely and correct payroll processing.
- Lead the adoption and implementation of cutting-edge financial technologies to enhance operational efficiency and data accuracy across the organization.
- Mentor and develop the accounting team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, professional growth, and high performance.
- Collaborate with senior management to devise and execute long-term financial strategies that support and align with the company’s overarching goals.
- Identify and address income, gift, and estate tax issues that arise in connection with the company’s financial activities.
- Oversee the preparation of detailed tax workpapers and quarterly tax estimates, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
- Serve as the primary liaison with external tax, legal, and family office professionals, ensuring seamless communication and coordination.
- Manage and monitor capital call processes and distribution activities, ensuring timely and accurate execution.
- Review and provide robust support for investment accounting and financial reporting, ensuring transparency and accuracy.
- Coordinate with commercial real estate Property Management Department concerning budget preparation, CAM reconciliations, and the management of annual rent escalations.
- Develop and enforce comprehensive policies and procedures to establish and maintain strong internal controls.
- Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local real estate legal requirements by staying informed on current and new legislation, implementing necessary adjustments.
- Facilitate effective communication and coordination among internal staff to promote organizational cohesion and efficiency.
- Exhibit a self-starter attitude and proactive approach to identifying and addressing challenges and opportunities within the finance department.
- Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, ensuring clear and concise dissemination of information.
- Exhibit exceptional ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Potentially take on additional family office duties as the role evolves, including overall investment monitoring and reporting, and contributing to broader organizational initiatives.
Requirements
- Prior supervisory experience.
- Public accounting experience.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in California (preferred).
- Prior experience in real estate finance and accounting, preferably in retail.
- Experience in Section 1031 exchanges is a significant plus.
- Full-time, in-office attendance is required.
- Family Office experience is a plus but not required.
- Investment management experience is a plus but not required.
- Knowledge of charitable foundations and coordination with foundations is valuable but not required.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and cross-functional teams.
